I got an email about this today. It mentioned those solar yard lights as an idea. In my personal experience and from what I have read they are not an impressive product. They are a great idea but it just doesn't seem to work. Personally for a budget alternative energy setup I got some rechargeable batteries and a solar charger for them. I think the cost was somewhere around $200-250. For lighting I would use them to feed a couple of LED lanterns and some flashlights. In a couple years when I upgrade I will get a couple solar panels, some deep cycle batteries and a few LED lights.
Anyway those are my .02 cents on that.

We've got a bunch of the cheap solar lights, 4 for $10 dollar store type. Rarely will they charge enough during the day to last through the night, but we keep some around (in the box) as an alternative AA battery charger. Left on the window sill, and repositioned a few times during the day, they do a decent job of putting a bulk charge on the battery. Then top the batts off with a smart charger.
Somewhat OT, but in a grid down/SHTF scenario, plan to hand out 4 solar lights and a cheap GMRS/FRS (AA) radio to some of the neighbors. Inexpensive and sustainable neighborhood security.
Ryan, we have about a dozen little solar lights around the yard for landscaping effect. Nice glow after dark without the glare. I have thought about them as a back-up for lighting, but I wouldn't want to rely on them.
However; low cost, easy to install, maintenance free, and nice if not needed, what's not to like?
